The Life Coaching Purpose Trap

You’re a smart woman and have followed all the right steps in life. You had the successful career and raised some great kids. But now they’re out of the house, and you realize you need something more, something meaningful, something that feels more aligned with YOU.

So you found life coaching. You finally found your people! And now, you want to do something meaningful, and make a difference through a life coaching practice that you love.

But you’re stuck. You know for sure that you want to be a coach, and everyone is telling you that your next step is to just get some clients and start coaching! And to do that you need to set up a website and start marketing.

So you go out and learn everything you need to know about how to set up a website – but when you go to write your copy you realize you have no idea what to say, because you simply don’t know who your people are or what you’re offering. So your website sits unpublished, in limbo.

You think… I just need to learn MORE about business & marketing. That’s the answer! So you take THE online business & marketing course everyone is talking about, but you can’t implement ANY of the action steps because you don’t know who your people are – or what you’re really offering.

Ok…. so in your business course, they talked about having a niche.... so THAT must be the answer. You need to just choose a niche and get on with it already. But you just don’t KNOW for sure who you want to work with, or the program you want to offer. Nothing feels right. Nothing feels ALIGNED – and you just can’t choose.

So you sit in limbo, with a half-finished website and some expensive online business courses under your belt. Along with several half-formed niches.

And you think to yourself…. What is wrong with me? I’m pretty sure I’m intelligent. I managed to succeed at a pretty high level career. I see all these OTHER coaches “rocking six figures”. Why can’t I figure this stuff out??

So you try one last thing… you hire a business or marketing coach to help you…..

And this is where I enter the story.

The story above is pretty much a summary of many of the clients I’ve worked with. New life coaches who come to me as a last resort to help them figure out their business and so they can start marketing and get those clients.

And every single person was a smart, intelligent and super creative woman.

And every one them was ALSO a meaning-driven, highly sensitive empath. Which is where the big challenge comes in. And if this sounds like you, this is probably why you haven’t finished that website yet – or are stuck in limbo because you can’t “choose” a niche.

Here's what's happening: Because you’re an empath and because making a difference and doing something meaningful is so deeply important to you, it’s nearly impossible to really start a life coaching business, or to feel motivated around marketing – if you aren’t yet clear on your true soul’s niche.

While a niche is simply a defined area of a market you want to serve (along with how you’re going to serve that market), your SOUL’S NICHE is different - and it's something that you can't just choose.

Your Soul's Niche connects the niche you want to serve – to your purpose as a coach.

And this means that if the niche you choose to work with isn’t deeply aligned with your purpose – it usually just won’t work.

You can for sure force yourself to set up your business around this niche, but it will feel hard and exhausting. And you MIGHT be able to force yourself to market to this niche for a while... but you don't feel any motivation or inspiration around your marketing and in my experience, it eventually fizzles out.

So why do so many coaches struggle with knowing their purpose - and connecting their purpose to a niche that feels deeply aligned with their soul?

And here is where what I call "The Life Coach Purpose Trap" comes in. Most of the coaches I've worked with think they HAVE already found their purpose. And their purpose is life coaching. So they don't think they have a purpose problem at all!

But the reality is that life coaching isn’t a purpose – it’s a skill. It's an amazing skill that you can use to help YOUR people make the transformation you're aching to help them make.

So then.... what IS your purpose as a coach? How do you "find" it??

The reality is that finding your purpose as a coach is your ideal next step after life coach training. But it's a step that requires deep, deep work and the peeling back of so much societal, family and cultural programming. And it's hard to do alone.
