What it Really Takes to Succeed Online as a Coach

business wisdom find your purpose life coaching soul connection

When I started out on-line as a Coach, what I had the most trouble with was figuring out what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it.

I struggled with what I truly wanted to offer to my clients. Even though I’d had lots of training and experience, I’d always worked for someone else as an employee or a contractor. I’d never put my real, vulnerable self, out there and asked people to hire me.

Hell, I never even considered myself an entrepreneur.

Self-employment for me meant, going from free-lance contract to free-lance contract – selling the service I offered and my credentials, but rarely sharing the essence of me.

An on-line coaching business is completely different that working as a free-lance contractor.

  • You solicit the business…..or you don’t.
  • You are the engine for the business machine.
  • You decide what the value of your services is.
  • The brand is YOU. Management guru,Tom Peters wrote about this in an article in Fast Company in 1997. It’s an interesting read.

The one big lesson I’ve learned about how you actually succeed in an on-line coaching business is this:

Be Yourself.

If you’re a mogul, that imagines a business with an infrastructure and a team of coaches that works for you – be that!

If you are an intuitive healer that connects people’s past lives with their present lives in a room in your home – be that!

If you are a writer and a speaker and an inspirer – be that!

The only, only, only (said for emphasis) way that your business will succeed is by being yourself.

Whatever or whoever that is.

You know where most people are stuck?

They can’t see themselves.

This whole exercise of starting a coaching business (and I see it as a huge experiment in creating work with your soul, not your analytical mind) is a process of seeing yourself and then being your self – and doing the thing that is YOU.

We all, including me, get caught up in wanting to be something that we’re not. I love the idea of running a soulful empire, like Oprah does – but it’s not my nature to work all the time or to be so focused on results.

When it comes to seeing yourself, you need to be unflinchingly honest about what’s right for you and then, dare to decide to chose it.

That might mean that your coaching business won’t make you into a millionaire.

That might mean that your coaching business will make you into an international speaker – who doesn’t coach at all.

That might mean that your coaching business is one where you volunteer at “Dress for Success” and help people who otherwise wouldn’t get helped.

That might mean that you go to across the world to teach.

That might mean that you start your own training company or retreat ranch.

That might mean that you coach people who are going through divorce on the phone and in person and provide a safe, healing personal space.

You don’t choose the business, your soul does.
